The project

The first, Horizon Europe funded project for EMMC, MaterialsCommons, is underway. MaterialsCommons brings together stakeholders to transform how people in materials research and innovation use data and digital systems, including modelling, AI, and workflow tools. The project consortium comprises 25 research institutions, EMMC and industrial partners across 14 countries.

Motivation

Our motivation is to build the infrastructure necessary to deliver an interconnected system of people and digital resources that will significantly improve the way we develop and work with materials in Europe.

Infrastructure

The infrastructure will not be built from scratch. It will integrate existing platforms, such as Materials Cloud, NOMAD, MaterialDigital, CAPeX, and initiatives like OPTIMADE, and include established collaborations from previous Horizon projects under the EMMC umbrella, for example the work on semantic interoperability focussed around the EMMO.

EMMC role

EMMC is leading the communication, dissemination and exploitation efforts for the project, with particular emphasis on the long-term sustainability of the infrastructure. Over the next four years, we expect MaterialsCommons to transition from prototypes and demonstrations into the MaterialsCommons Foundation, with a legal and operational framework to ensure the results from this project can be sustained.

In many ways, MaterialsCommons builds on the foundations for an advanced materials world that started 10 years ago with EMMC CSA and the founding of EMMC ASBL in 2019, all of which bring together diverse communities and domains, data, modelling, and digital methodologies for materials.

Kick-off meeting & pics

The kick-off meeting took place at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology on 17 June 2026. Here are some pictures of the event.
