The Physical Sciences Data Infrastructure (PSDI) & Henry Royce Institute Materials Data Summit was held from 29th to 31st July 2026 at the University of Manchester.
The Materials Data Summit brought together professionals working on digitalisation in materials science, giving them the opportunity to share their work, learn about recent developments, and build collaborations.
EMMC was represented by Executive Secretary Gerhard Goldbeck who presented a poster with an overview of the Materials Commons project.
Ontology was addressed in the discussions and in Jesper Friis’s (EMMC Organisational Member SINTEF) presentation on EMMO as a science-based foundation.
Alexandra Simperler, who also participated in this event, takes home with her:
“AI does already play a role the research and discovery of advanced materials and it is hungry for data… more data than a researcher can produce personally.
We need to use each other’s data and add ‘trust’ to FAIR.
Bring on FAIR by design, metrology, standards, ontologies, metadata … a few of our new favourite things!”
