Advancing Battery Cell and Pack Characterization with Innovative Metrology and Calibrated Impedance Spectroscopy
Speaker: Nawfal Al-Zubaidi R-Smith
Keysight Technologies is a leading S&P 500 company with over 15,000 employees, delivering market-leading design, emulation, and test solutions to help engineers develop and deploy faster, with less risk, throughout the entire product lifecycle.
For battery testing, Keysight develops solutions tailored for e-mobility and stationary applications.
The corporate R&D lab in Austria is the leading Keysight team for battery test research which published dozens of research articles on advanced battery testing from lower power to high power, as well as multi-domain battery modelling and AI-based data analytics. The Keysight Austria R&D lab houses state-of-the-art test and modelling equipment for battery test & measurement, for example, the high-performance Scienlab testers for cell, module, and pack testing.
Abstract
This presentation introduces key advancements from the DigiCell Horizon Europe project, highlighting Keysight Technologies’ contributions to battery innovation.
DigiCell aims to create a digitally integrated framework to optimize the production of high-performance Lithium-ion batteries and beyond. By utilizing advanced metrology based characterization methods and machine learning, DigiCell aims to reduce production costs, minimizes material waste, and lowers carbon emissions. Its approach emphasizes open-source algorithms, data standardization, and quality assurance, fostering greater efficiency and sustainability in battery manufacturing.
In the second part of the talk, we introduce Keysight Austria breakthroughs in integrating hardware metrology, advanced data analytics, and calibrated impedance spectroscopy for battery development. The discussion covers three core areas: the application of calibrated Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) to eliminate systematic errors, the quantification of impedance uncertainties to improve measurement reliability, and the fast characterization of self-discharge for better battery cell classification. These innovations drive significant advancements in precision testing across the battery value chain.
